When visiting Romania, the North part of the country should not, without doubt, be ignored.
Bucovina is one of the most attractive and visited touristic areas in Romania. No wonder that, in 1975, the area received the „Pomme d’Or” award (The International Federation of Travel Writers and Tourism Journalists).
ABC Romania Travel team prepared a 4 days tour which includes visits to some of the most important monasteries and some traditional villages. Part of the UNESCO heritage, the monasteries are most known around the world for their exterior paintings of bright and intense colours, as well as for their Moldavian architecture.
Bucovina is the place where you can follow ancient rythms of tradition and culture, age’old customs and celebrations.
As you already know, the tour can be tailor-made for your own preferences, duration and comfort.
Point of departure: Bucharest (or city of arrival) – First destination: the Region of Moldova – accomodation in Piatra Neamt and visit the city
Head towards Campulung Moldovenesc – accommodation in Campulung Moldovenesc.
This day is dedicated to explore the world famous XIII to XVI Century painted monasteries Arbore, Voronet and Humor.
The frescos of these monasteries are among the most picturesque treasures of Romania. Each fresco tells a different biblical story through the paintings found on both the inside and outside walls of the monasteries, as well as on the ceilings of the interior. The illustrated scenes resemble prayers, episodes of sacred hymns and themes such as The Last Judgment and The Ladder of St. John, all in colorful and rich imagery of apostles, evangelists, philosophers, martyrs, angels and demons.
Founded in 1487, the Voronet Monastery is widely known throughout Europe as “the Sistine Chapel of the East” due to the intense shade of blue, highlighting its interior and exterior wall paintings, feature commonly known as “Voronet blue”.
Humor Monastery presents an extremely valuable collection of icons from the 16th century.
Day 3 is reserved for visiting the last, but not least, painted monasteries of our schedule, Moldovita and Sucevita.
The previously mentioned “Pomme d’Or” prize awarded to Bucovina by International Federation of Writers and Journalists on Tourism (FIJET, 1975) can be seen at Moldovita Monastery.
