Transylvania is one of the most beautiful and interesting regions in Romania. The land was inhabited by Romanians, Hungarians, Saxons and Szeklers, all of whom have left their mark in specific parts of the region. One of these groups, the Saxons, lived in the southern part of Transylvania for centuries, but at a certain point in history, to be exact, during the communist period, things went bad for them. Starting then and even after the Romanian revolution, many of the Saxons left Transylvania, looking for a better life in West Germany. So their houses were left behind…
In this one day tour you can discover traditional Saxon villages, some of them still inhabited and some completely deserted. You will not only be amazed by the stories you’ll hear, but also by the beautiful scenery that surrounds you.
The biking tour starts at Vard, to where you will be transferred by car from Sibiu*. Following the map, we will pass through Chirpar and Sasaus where you can observe locals working their land. We will reach two forgotten villages, Somartin and Gherdeal, yet the one to impress most is Gherdeal due to its ghostlike atmosphere.
Although the village is unpopulated and we’ll ride on empty streets, the nature will be with us, enchanting our senses – our eyes will enjoy the spectacular view of the Fagaras Mountains, our ears will be enriched by bird tweets while the one century old houses will share stories of the past.
Our 43 km loop will head back towards Vard on a different path, checking also Veseud village.
