If you are an adventure seeker, you will certainly enjoy this tour! Discover one of the most beautiful roads in the world – the well known Transfagarasan – that crosses over the top of the mountains (the highest point is at 2042 meters).
What you may need to know about this tour is that it’s a circular one. Leaving Sibiu, the Transfagarasan Road will take us to a point of return. And on the road we will admire the picturesque landscapes viewed from different perspectives, going from one point of interest to another.
We will enter the road passing Cartisoara towards Balea Waterfall. This is the highest cascade from Romania with no less than 60 m downfall. Considering Transfagarasan road is closed during the winter, this is the place from where we can pick a cable car in order to arrive at Balea Lake. As we go further and higher, we encounter a different landscape and weather. At Balea Lake the temperature shows a significant decline, thanks to the high altitude, so make sure you also pack a sweater. Due to very low temperatures during the winter, an Ice Hotel is being built each year, as a tradition. So let us know if you are planning on spending some “frozen” unforgettable days here!
The majority will decide if we will take our lunch at the restaurant on the lake, grab a snack from the tiny shops with local, traditional food and drinks or just rest for a few moments while enjoying the view.
Our next stop will be at Vidraru. Vidraru’s dam is the highest energetic dam in Romania (166 m), its construction being completed in 1966. The entire area is “protected” by the statue of Prometheus – an iron statue build as a symbol of power. Make sure you bring your camera! The surroundings and landscapes will make you want to capture the moment. For those who plan the vacation during summer season, we can also take a boat trip on Vidraru lake.
Going on with our journey on Transfagarasan road we will make a stop at the ruins of Poienari Fortress. That is if you accept the challenge of climbing no less than 1500 stairs to reach the real house of Vlad the Impaler (also known as Dracula).
After we exit this marvelous road, we will reach Curtea de Arges Monastery where we will learn the beautiful and romantic legend of Master Manole and his beloved wife Ana.
Going in circles, as we mentioned at the beginning of the tour, we’ll return to Sibiu on the Olt River Valley, road on which you will witness some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country.
One of the most important landmarks that we will check on our way is Cozia Monastery. The monastery was built between the years 1386-1388 and is one of the most important legacies of ruler Mircea cel Batran (Mircea the Old).
Keep in mind that this tour can also start from Bucharest! Check it out here: ADRENALINE Tour!
NOTE: Transfagarasan road is partially closed during winter and spring seasons, the access being limited or blocked due to the snow. Therefore, the period in which the road is entirely open is July till October.
