Discover one of the most beautiful roads in the world – the well known Transfagarasan! The road crosses over the top of the mountains (the highest point is at 2042 meters) and there are lots of tourist attractions to visit on the way!
Depending on the city of your arrival we can take the tour from north to south or the other way around. More than that, if you plan a longer vacation, we can mix the tour with one in Transylvania and also visit Sibiu, Sighisoara, Brasov, Bran, Prahova Valley – discovering parts of history, castles, legends and much more!
If Bucharest is your chosen city of departure, we will leave early in the morning towards Curtea de Arges. Here we will visit Curtea de Arges Monastery where we will learn the beautiful and romantic legend of Master Manole and his beloved wife Ana.
Going on with our journey on Transfagarasan road, be prepared to enjoy some spectacular landscapes! We will make several stops along the way:
The ruins of Poienari Fortress. That is if you accept the challenge to climb no less than 1500 stairs. Poienari is the real house of Vlad the Impaler (also known as Dracula).
Vidraru’s Dam. The highest dam in Romania (166 m) is an energetic dam completed in 1966. The entire area is “protected” by the statue of Prometheus – an iron statue build as a symbol of power. Make sure you bring your camera! The surroundings and landscapes will make you want to capture the moment. For those who plan the vacation during summer season, we can also take a boat trip on Vidraru lake.
As we go further and higher, we encounter a different landscape and weather. At Balea Lake the temperature shows a significant decline, thanks to the high altitude, so make sure you also pack a sweater. The majority decides if we will take our lunch at restaurant on the lake, grab a snack from the tiny shops with local, traditional food and drinks or just rest for a few moments while enjoying the view.
In the winter, there is a tradition to build an Ice Hotel at Balea Lac. Give us the details in case you plan to spend some “frozen” unforgettable days!
Going back to our tour, Transfagarasan road turns into a wide open valley. Again, keep your cameras close. As far as your sight can reach, you can admire the serpent-shaped road going down to our next stop:
Balea Waterfall. It is the highest cascade from Romania with no less than 60 m downfall. Considering Transfagarasan road is closed during the winter, this is the place from where we can pick a cable car in order to arrive at Balea Lac.
Our last stop will be at Cartisoara, where we will end our tour by tasting a traditional dish and raising our glasses of wine for a wonderful journey; from there we will return to the city of departure.
If you choose so, we can continue the tour towards Sibiu, former European Cultural Capital or towards Bran and Brasov.
NOTE: Transfagarasan road is partially closed during winter and spring seasons, the access being limited or blocked due to the snow. Therefore, the period in which it is entirely open is July till October.
